There has been no shortage of drama in Belgium this season for Dexia Mons-Hainaut. The beaten finalists in the EuroChallenge two seasons ago have had a coaching change, a heart-breaking defeat in a Eurcup Qualifying tie with Valencia, injuries and disappointing results. The latest development at the club has seen power forward Curtis Sumpter arrive on a short-term deal as a temporary replacement for the injured Brandon Costner. "I've known Curtis for something like three years," said Dexia coach Arik Shivek, the man who replaced former boss Chris Finch at the start of the season. "I had wanted to bring him in as a power forward when I built the team in Amsterdam and then I saw him in (Las) Vegas in the summer league and I have known him since he was in Villanova. "Once his name came up, and he was already here in Europe playing in France, we thought he would be a good player to bring in until Brandon comes back. "He's a smart player, very athletic, a good passer, okay shooter - not at the level shooting wise of Brandon but he can shoot the ball. "And he's a very good defensive player. He's an intelligent guy, was the captain at Villanova so he's a very high level person." Dexia have a tough EuroChallenge campaign that tips off next week at Elan Chalon in France. They will also take on Proteas EKA AEL of Cyprus and Cedevita of Croatia. Sumpter is just hoping to help the team win some games. "I'm pretty much a four (power forward), but I can also play a three (small forward)," Sumpter said. "I'm just here right now to replace Brandon and hopefully I can contribute to the team. "I'm just really excited to be here. I'm just trying to fit in the best way that I can and learn from these guys." Sumpter should pose Dexia's opponents some problems. "I'm very versatile," he said. "I can shoot the three-ball but one thing that is different about me is that I can actually put the ball on the floor and that's what makes me a hard match-up. "The coach has talked to me about possibly playing me at the three sometimes, so I think I'll be an asset to the team." There is a chance that Sumpter could remain with the squad once Costner returns from injury. "When we reach that point, we'll have to decide because for now, he came for Brandon," Shivek said. |
