EUROBASKET 2011

14. Dirk Nowitzki (Germany)
With his place in the history books more than secure, Dirk Nowitzki could be adding another golden page to the chapter very soon

Dirk Nowitzki will have to be as good as he's ever been if Germany are going to have a chance of reaching the Quarter-Finals of the EuroBasket because they are 0-3 in the Second Round.

What the living legend will not have to do, however, is worry about his place in EuroBasket history.

Already the EuroBasket 2005 MVP after carrying Germany on his back to the silver medal, the 33-year-old Nowitzki is closing in another milestone.

The MVP of the NBA Finals this season with the Dallas Mavericks became the competition's second all-time leading scorer on Wednesday in Germany's 77-68 defeat to Spain.

He passed Israeli legend Mickey Berkowitz (935pts) when he scored his seventh point against Spain, and his overall total now stands at 948 points - 56 behind Greece basketball icon Nikos Galis.

Nowitzki has played in 42 games in his EuroBasket career while Galis, who led Greece to the 1987 gold medal, competed in 32.

He could end up becoming the number one scorer in the next few days with the Germans taking on Turkey and then Lithuania.

Nowitzki is averaging 20.2 points per game at EuroBasket 2011.

On two occasions, in a victory over Israel and a defeat to Serbia, Nowitzki scored 25 points.
