Turning point: Jaime Fernandez, Alejandro Abrines and Daniel Diez scored a basket each in the first 80 seconds of the second half and set the tone for the rest of the second half.

Game Hero: Diez scored whenever the team needed it most, hitting 3-of-5 three-pointers on the way to a double-double of 22 points and 11 boards.

Stats Don't Lie: Germany made only 16-of-55 shots from the field, while the Spanish team was 26-of-57.

Daniel Theis' effort was not enough for Germany

Spain progressed to the U20 European Championship medal round after beating Germany 73-47 in their quarter-final encounter in Stozice Arena, Friday.

Spain started pulling away already in the first quarter, as Daniel Diez scored five points in a row and Pere Oriola added a tip-in to give the Spaniards a 13-5 lead.

Diez scored five more points to extend the advantage to double-digits, but Germany's influential guard Dennis Schroeder hit two treys to cut the gap to 20-14.

Germany got within three points after Philip Neumann's back-to-back baskets, but Alejandro Abrines finished the half by scoring seven consecutive points in the last two minutes of the second period to give Spain a 33-24 advantage.

Spain extended their lead to 13 points after the break, but the Germans fought back once again, chipping down the deficit to 36-41.

However that was as far as they would gete, the Spanish team finished the third quarter with a 12-3 run and headed into the final stanza with a 53-39 lead.

Diez and Fernandez made key treys at the start of the fourth period to put the result beyond doubt..

Diez had a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead all scorers. Alejandro Abrines collected 15 points, while Jaime Fernandez chipped in with 14.

"Defence was the key today. We played well on the defensive end and ran well on offense. We were concentrated throughout the game and this was very important," said Spanish coach Luis Guil.

Dennis Schroeder hit all his three attempts from downtown and was Germany's top scorer on nine points, while Daniel Theis finished the game with 6 points and 12 rebounds.

In the semi-final, Spain will face the winner of the quarterfinal between the hosts Slovenia and France, while Germany will play in the Classification Round for 5th to 8th place.
