Ukraine Dump Germany To Go Through
Andriy Lebedintsev notched a double-double to lead four players in double figures as Ukraine dominated Germany 76-53 to advance to the Qualifying Round of the U18 European Championship Men.
Germany could afford a loss by 13 points and still go through from Group C, but Lebedintsev collected 19 points, 12 rebounds and four steals in helping Ukraine put the game away between the third and fourth quarters.
Oleksandr Osnach added 16 points, Roman Dmytrenko had 14 and Ruslan Otverchenko scored 13 points for Ukraine, who improved to 1-2.
Germany ended the Preliminary Round at 1-2 as well but will play against relegation to Division B. Maik Zirbes paced the Germans with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Alex Schrempf also scored 10 points. Erik Land chipped in eight points and 11 rebounds in a losing effort.
Kay Bluemel's Germans found the better start to the game, leading 9-5 early and 14-10 after a three-pointer by Schrempf. And the advantage was 19-14 after one period for Germany.
Neither team could gain a real advantage in the second quarter as the teams went into the locker-rooms deadlocked at 34-34.
Ukraine began gaining momentum but Schrempf's foul shot kept Germany within 43-40. Oleg Ruban's team had too many weapons and reeled off an 11-0 run to pull ahead 54-40. It was 54-42 after three periods. Germany were unable to deal with the Ukraine zone and Ruban's team put together a 10-0 start to open a 64-42 gap.
The lead grew to 25 points but Simon Schmitz's three-pointer cut the margin to 69-51 as Germany tried to get closer. Ukraine however answered with a 6-0 spurt to move onto the next round.
