Khimik Almost Throw Away Win At Atomerömü

BC Khimik Yuzhny almost frittered away a big lead at the end but escaped Atomerömü SE with a 76-73 victory.

Lorenzo Williams had a game-high 28 points and also nine assists for the Hungarian team on Tuesday but his long attempt from three-point range in the closing seconds was off target and Khimik rebounded to seal the win.

The Ukrainian team improved to 2-1 in Group D and Atomerömü slumped to 1-2.

Khimik looked to be closing on a comfortable win when a three-pointer by Sasa Vasiljevic put them on top, 71-61, with 2:32 remaining.

Williams earned a trip to the line and sank two free-throws and then on a fast-break, fed Donald Cole who made a jump shot to reduce the arrears to six.

Twenty-year-old power forward Ferdinánd Morgen of Hungary followed with a three-pointer and suddenly the visitors found themselves clinging to a 71-68 lead with 1:35 to play.

More cracks showed as Reyshawn Terry made just one of two free-throws for Khimik, but Williams, who was 14 of 15 at the line on the night, then split a pair with 58 seconds to go to close the gap to 72-69.

The two players each drew fouls again and made two at the stripe to leave Khimik hanging on to 74-71 lead.

After Williams made a jumper with 20 seconds to play and cut Khimik's advantage to one, the Hungarian team had no choice but to foul.

They put Vasiljevic on the line.

After he sank two to restore the three-point lead, the Hungarian outfit brought the ball up the floor and Williams ended up taking a potential game-tying three but missed as Khimik survived.

Vasiljevic's 19 points led Khimik with Aaron McGhee contributing 15.
