France Have One Eye On Olympics

12 September 2003

The stakes couldn’t be any higher for France in Saturday’s semi-final at the European Championships.

Victory will not only put them in the title game, but also secure a berth in next summer’s Olympics.

Greece, as hosts, and world champions Serbia & Montenegro - two sides already knocked out of the European Championships - have places reserved for the Games in Athens and Les Bleus are determined to join them.

"On Tuesday I explained clearly to the players the conditions we would have to reach to get qualification," France coach Alain Weisz said in L'Equipe.

Les Bleus have won all four of their games in Sweden, beating Bosnia-Herzegovina, Italy and Slovenia in the group stage before prevailing over Russia in a quarter-final.

"I know they will not be satisfied with a place in the semis,” Weisz said.

“They want to go until the end."

France were silver medallists at the Sydney Games.
