Gravelines-Dunkerque point guard Laurent Sciarra will leave the Pro A side after failing to agree terms on a contract extension.
The 31-year-old former French international joined the northern outfit last November on an eight-month deal, helping them lift their first-ever trophy when they overcame Colet in the French Cup final last month.
Sciarra was also named player of the season by the club, but the fairytale has now come to an end with Gravelines confirming they have failed to agree a salary with the player.
"Laurent Sciarra has rejected our final two-year extension offer," said the club in a statement.
"In a bid to reach an agreement the club had made an offer for a historical amount but it was not enough."
Club director Herve Beddeleem further explained that the contract extension included a decrease in salary, something which Sciarra refused to accept.
"This is what happens at the club when you sign for two years," said Beddeleem, "Your salary decreases. That's the way it is.
"Laurent had declared right from the start that he wished to stay at Gravelines and that it had nothing to do with money.
"We really regret his decision."
Sciarra also spoke of his sorrow at leaving the club.
"I really wanted to stay, but the director (Beddeleem) knew that I would not stay in those conditions," he said. |
