France End Lithuania Streak



Mouhammadou Jaiteh scored 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter to lead France to a 61-56 victory over Lithuania and book a spot in the quarterfinals of the U18 European Championship.

Jaiteh, who tallied seven points in the final 1:35 including two free throws with nine seconds, also had nine rebounds for France, who improved to 3-1 in the group. Ulysse Adjagba added 13 points for the French.

Paulius Semaska led Lithuania with 15 points while Arturas Gudaitis had 11 points and 11 rebounds and Osvaldas Olisevicius also hit for 11 points. Lithuania dropped to 3-1 in the group after shooting 2-12 (17 percent) from three-point range and 6-14 (43 percent) from the free throw line.

The Lithuanians, who came into the game already guaranteed a spot in the quarters, opened the game with a 11-2 run. The lead was still 16-11 after one period.

France trailed 22-16 before they closed the first half on a 10-2 run with Livio Jean-Charles scoring six of those points. France led 26-24 at the break.

An 8-2 run gave Lithuania a 32-28 lead early in the third quarter but a 7-1 surge to close the period left the French ahead 41-40 going into the final frame.

Gudaitis scored the first four points of the quarter for a 44-41 Lithuania lead. But France gained control of the game with a 13-2 run for a 54-46 advantage with less than three minutes left.

The cushion was down to 56-53 when Jaiteh got an offensive rebound and scored to reestablish a five-point gap with 33 seconds left. And then the 16-year-old made two free throws with nine seconds remaining to ice the game.
