16 July 2012

U16 WOMEN

Spain and France had completely different showings in the Preliminary Round of the U16 European Championship Women, with the Spanish finishing third in their group, while the French entered the Qualifying Round with a 3-0 record.

But in their opening match Qualifying Round Group F, the Spaniards showed a different level of play and defeated France, 55-49.

The game was destined to be a classic when Spain's Laura Quevedo opened it with a three-pointer and French guard Alix Duchet answered immediately.

The French took an early lead, but Spain reacted on time to close the first quarter with a five point advantage, 17-12.

Lisa Berkani showed up in the second quarter, lifting France to a 29-21 lead at half-time.

Les Bleus tried to stay in front while Spain was peaking down with a very low shooting percentage.

After the French reached their biggest lead in the game, 13 points, the Spanish team started to react like a champion, regaining control and taking the lead with 6:26 to play.

Angela Salvadores, who finished with 19 points, was the booster of the Spanish comeback, while Laura Quevedo finished with 11 points and 5 rebounds.

In the French team, Lisa Berkani topped all scorers with 15 points.
