France charge past Czechs

Four players scored in double figures to lead defending champions France to a 68-48 victory over Czech Republic to remain undefeated at the Termosteps U16 European Championship Women.

Eléonore Grossemy led the way with 14 points while Hélčna Akmouche (12), Agathe Degorces (11) and Adja Konteh (11) also hit double digits as France improved to 3-0 in the Qualifying Round Group E.

Arnaud Guppillotte's French held the Czechs to just 25 percent shooting for the game while watching Richard Fousek's Czech Republic make just 14-of-30 (47 percent) from the free throw line.

Karolína Elhotová and Martina Cepelková both hit for 13 points as the Czech Republic dropped to 0-3 in the group.

The Czechs stayed close to the French for most of the first quarter with Elhotová and Cepelková combining for 11 points as Fousek's team trailed just 14-12. But the French scored the final six points to lead 20-12 after one period.  Degorces pushed the lead to double digits to start the second and Jenny Fouasseau's three-ball made it 27-14, which Elhotová answered with a trey of her own. But a triple by Marion Lemonnier increased the lead to 17 points - 34-17. Elhotová and Cepelková closed the gap to 40-27 at the break.

Reserve Barbora Sloupová and Barbora Kaspárková each scored five points to spark a 13-5 surge out of the break to cut the deficit to 45-40. France answered with the next eight points including Fouasseau's triple for a 53-40 lead. But the Czechs would trail just 55-44 after three periods. Grossemy, however, opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer and the French defense would shut down the Czechs, who missed their first 11 shots from the floor and four free throws of the fourth while also committing six turnovers in watching France pull away with a 15-0 run for a 68-44 advantage with just two minutes to play.
