Ukraine, Finns Pick Up Victories


Finland and Ukraine picked up victories in the relegation round of the U18 European Championship Men to remain alive to stay in Division A.

Joonas Caven scored 26 points and Ilari Seppälä hit for 22 points and Tommi Huolila had 14 points as Finland beat Greece 87-78 to improve to 1-2 in the relegation group.

Martin Kríz's monster performance was not enough for the Czechs

Giannoulis Larentzakis scored 20 points and Kyprianos Maragkos had 17 points and nine points for the losing side.

Greece went ahead 10-0 and led 20-11 with a 21-16 lead after the first quarter. The Greek advantage was 29-20 before Finland went on a 10-0 surge and led 42-40 at the break.

After Greece pulled within 49-46, Finland went on a 9-2 streak and then scored the final six points of the third quarter for a 67-55 cushion after three frames.

The Finnish lead was 79-64 with five minutes left when Greece put together a 12-0 run to pull within 79-76. But Finland caught themselves and made six-of-six free throws in the final 29 seconds to finish off Greece.

In the other relegation round game, Klym Artamonov collected 20 points, four rebounds and six assists while Danylo Zuikov had 18 points in Ukraine's 76-72 win over Czech Republic.
Ukraine, who also received 11 points from Volodymyr Shevchenko, improved to 2-1.

The Czechs, who dropped to 1-2, were led by 32 points and 16 rebounds by Martin Kríz and 23 points and nine rebounds from Tomas Kyzlink.

The game was even 10-10 before the Czechs pulled ahead 17-10 and increased the gap to nine points before a 21-14 Czech lead after one quarter.

Czech Republic were ahead 23-14 before Ukraine went on a 15-2 run for a 29-25 lead. The Ukrainians pushed the lead to seven points and led 41-36 at halftime.

The Ukrainian lead was six points early in the third quarter but the Czechs would not go away and even led 56-55 before Ukraine were ahead 57-56 after three periods.

The lead changed hands five times in the fourth quarter with Czech Republic leading 72-71 with 1:31 left. The game was tied 72-72 when Kyzlink turned the ball over with 46 seconds left then Kríz committed a turnover with 30 seconds before Volodymyr Gerun made two free throws to ice the game with 10 seconds left.
