Relegation Round: Day Four Roundup

Portugal and Great Britain will be playing Division B basketball next summer after both were relegated at the U20 European Championship Women in Debrecen.

The survival hopes of the Portuguese team were shot down in rather cruel fashion by Italy who now stand on the brink of survival after a fourth straight Relegation Round success.

The Italians rode out 56-52 winners in a tense and exciting game which Portugal had led with only a couple of minutes to play.

When Daniela Domingues made a basket to put her team 50-49 ahead, it looked like Portugal may be within a fighting chance of staying up but Italy outscored their opponent 7-2 in crunch time, keeping their composure from the free-throw line to seal the win.

Great Britain meanwhile was always expected to crash out of the top flight after three losses, and their fourth finally sealed their fate after they went down 72-61 to Latvia who are still alive and kicking with slim hopes of surviving.

A quite stunning shooting display from behind the three-point line by Sabine Dukate was the main reason for Latvia being able to head into the penultimate day of action with some hope of escaping the drop.

She sunk six triples to finish the game with 18 points.

Latvia must now beat Portugal and hope Great Britain win against Italy on Saturday to set up a potential final day survival showdown with the Italians.
