runners-up in 2002 and 2004 to take a 17-14 lead after the first quarter.

But Spartak fought back in the second quarter and took a 34-31 lead thanks largely to Australian superstar Lauren Jackson.

Jackson, a gold medal winner at the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Brazil, made a crucial contribution before half-time on her way to 16 match points to give Spartak a slender advantage.

But Lotos refused to lie down and former USA international Chamique Holdsclaw and Germany national team player Anne Breitreiner both made telling contributions.

Holdsclaw, who went on to weigh in with 22 points, and Breitreiner, who would finish with 19 points both found the net to give the Polish side a 55-45 lead heading into the final quarter.

The pair were not finished and continued to dominate the court to give Lotos a 67-59 lead with three minutes left on the clock.

Spartak rallied and Jackson added two free throws to put her side to within a point of Lotos with a minute remaining but coach Natalia Hejkova`s side were unable to find a way past the Lotos defense who held on for a famous victory.
