Contrasting Fortunes For Czech Sides
// 04 April 2006

Gambrinus Brno coach Jan Bobrovsky believes his side can become the tournament´s dominate force after winning their first ever EuroLeague Women title on Sunday.

Gambrinus, who lost last year´s final, got their revenge over defending champions Samara with a 68-54 victory at the Brno Arena.

It is something that we had not achieved until now but this is not the end.

American guard Nykesha Sales led the team with 16 points, while Hana Machova added 14 as the squad finally fulfilled their potential.

Bobrovsky is now urging the players to build on their success.

He said: "It is very nice, for sure. It is something that we had not achieved until now but this is not the end. We´ve won in 2006 and now we want to hold it for a couple of years."

The Czech Republic national team coach admitted he was not convinced that Gambrinus would seal the win until the dying minutes of Sunday's game.

"I haven`t seen such a big fight for many years. I was only sure about our win in the last three minutes when we took that bigger lead and Samara had no chance of coming back."

Bobrovsky, 61, also declared that he has no plans to retire and believes he can still learn more about the game.

"It is true I sometimes feel tired but I will do it until my pension, for sure.

"I never said I am an expert in anything and certainly not in women`s basketball. Nobody can say he is an expert in women`s basketball. That is nonsense," he added.
