Czechs Hold Off Italy To Claim 9th Spot

Monika Satoranská of the Czech Republic led all scorers with 15 points, on an impressive 11-for-12 from the free throw line

The Czech Republic held off Italy in the final minutes of the game for 9th place at the Global Vision U18 European Championship Women, to reach a 59-54 victory.

The Czechs were leading by a comfortable 12-point margin, 36-24, in the beginning of the second quarter, only to see their lead vanished in the 32nd minute of the game, when the scoreboard was showing 44-44.

The Czech team managed to re-open a small gap but did not manage to pull away again and Italy tied the game once more with 74 seconds to go, 52-52, after a three-point shot made by Caterina Dotto.

But then Monika Satoranska scored six of their 15 points, and Salacova add one, to help their team finish with a 7-2 run and cap the game.

Satoranska added 13 rebounds to her performance and finished with an outstanding 91.7 percent from the free-throw line on 11-from-12 shooting.

The Czechs dominated in this crucial category in general, with a 87.5 free throw percentage to only 36.4 of Italy.

Alice Nori led all Italian scorers with 12 points, while the Dotto twins, Francesca and Caterina, combined for 15 points and seven rebounds.
