Expectations were high for the Czech Republic to defend their crown at the 2007 EuroBasket Women in Italy, and of course many were a bit shocked that tournament debutants Belarus knocked off the Czechs in the quarter-finals.
Czechs Secure Fifth Spot

The last team to get the ticket for the World Olympic Qualifying Tournament is the Czech Republic.

The former champs easily beat Lithuania in the classification game for fifth place 93-54 and finished the tournament with two wins in a row.

Fifth-placed games don't usually have the biggest meaning, but Sunday's showdown at the 2007 EuroBasket Women between the yet-reigning champions Czech Republic and 1997 title-holders Lithuania still has loads of meaning.

The winner captures the final berth in the pre-qualification tournament for the 2008 Olympics.

Czechs Back In Form

The Czech Republic may not get the chance to defend their EuroBasket Women title, but they did remain alive for the pre-Olympic qualification tournament with a comfortable 75-50 victory over Belgium on Saturday.

Michaela Uhrova came off the bench to score 15 points and Eva Viteckova added 14 points as the 2005 champions advanced to a Sunday showdown with Lithuania for fifth place at the 2007 EuroBasket Women.
