Latvia Grab Spot From Fireless Czechs
Latvia used a balanced attack to beat Czech Republic 71-46 in Group C of the U18 European Championship Men and book their spot in the Qualifying Round.
Janis Berzins scored 12 points and Oskars Reinfelds had 10 points while Andrejs Grazulis collected nine points and 14 rebounds as Latvia improved to 1-2 in the group.
Tomas Kyzlink had 14 points and nine rebounds and Petr Herman scored 11 points but could not keep the Czechs from dropping to 0-3.
The Czechs scored the first basket but Latvia followed with 13 straight points and led by as many as 17 points in the first quarter, which ended with Latvia ahead 28-14.
Latvia went on an 11-0 run to start the second quarter and the advantage grew to 26 points in the second frame with the Latvians leading 44-23 at the break.
The Baltic side scored the first 10 points of the second half in holding the Czechs scoreless for the first 7:19 of the third quarter, which ended with Latvia ahead 56-31.
Czech Republic were able to trim the deficit to 17 points over the course of the fourth quarter.
