Russia Ease Past Czech Republic

11 August 2011

Defending champions Russia began their bid for a repeat at the U16 European Championship 2011 for Women with an emphatic 51-39 victory over the Czech Republic in Cagliari.

And their would-be challengers have now been placed on notice that the 2010 winners are fully intent on making a run at the title after leading from start to finish in the Group B opener

10-9 in front at the end of the first quarter, Rustam Abdulin's side stamped their authority on the contest when a three-pointer from Elizaveta Komorova started a 12-0 run in the second.

The Czechs could not rebound and, after trailing 25-15 at half-time, they saw their rivals hit another 12 unanswered points at the start of the third period.

It gave the Russians - led by 12 points and 9 rebounds from Polina Fedorova - the freedom to run their full rotation and although the Czechs pulled off a 13-3 flurry in the closing minutes, they remained well behind.

"I don't think that was the best performance from the Czechs," said Abdulin, whose side can now book a spot in the second round if they beat Greece on Friday. "But we're happy with the win."

Kamila Hoskova had a game-high 17 points for the Czechs who shot just 19%.
