U16 WOMEN

The Czech Republic picked up their first win in Group B of the U16 European Championships for Women on Friday by holding off Croatia 74-68 in a free-flowing encounter.

But after leading by 10 in the fourth quarter, the Czechs had to overcome a late rally before scoring 6 of the last 8 points of the game to ease away.

A 7-0 start gave Richard Fousek's side the early lead but Croatia hit back to level at 15-15 late in the opening period. With Antonija Chiabov hitting 18 of her team-best 25 points before half-time, their momentum continued as they built 33-24 advantage before the Czechs rallied to trail 37-36.

Both teams had the upper hand in the third but the Czechs eventually made a break with an 18-8 run that pushed them 63-53 ahead with six minutes left. A 13-5 Croatia tear brought them back to within 2 points but they could not quite pull off the escape, remaining winless at the bottom of the standings.

Kamila Hoskova had 21 for the Czech Republic, who must beat Greece on Saturday to avoid complications for a place in Round 2.
