Slovak Republic: Rancik Uncertain About EuroBasket

Slovakia are desperate for Martin Rancik to play in the EuroBasket Division B games this summer but the star forward has concerns about his heart and may make himself unavailable.

The 2.05m Rancik missed a short spell last season with Fortitudo Bologna after telling doctors he was having problems with his heart.

Doctors eventually cleared the 27-year-old to play again, and he helped the team win the title.

"I would like to play for Slovakia as long as I am in good health," said Rancik, who played college basketball at Iowa State.

"My heart is the most important thing for me and my feeling is very important. I would like to help my country - at least in the important game against Ireland (on September 10)."

Slovakia, looking to rejoin Division A, are unbeaten in Group B with winagainst the Republic of Ireland, Switzerland and Malta.

Jozef Smolek, the secretary general of the Slovak Basketball Association added: "We met Martin after he returned home from Italy. We congratulated him for his good performances in Italian league.

"He started to talk about national team. I am happy that there is a possibility of his participation in our national team.

"Everything depends on his health."

Rancik loves living in Italy but clubs in Ukraine and Russia are interested in his services and may convince him to leave Lega A.
