On Tuesday, under the eyes of FIBA Europe President Olafur Rafnsson and FIBA Europe Secretary General, the U18 European Championship Division C took off in San Marino.

Gibraltar were stunned by a 4-23 first quarter against Wales as they slumped to a heavy 29-95 defeat.

Wales had their best scorer in Jacob Lloyd with 15 points, as every player was able to fill the scoresheet.

Followed by the President of the Italian Basketball Federation FIP, Dino Meneghin and the President of the National Olympic Committee of San Marino, Angelo Vicini as well as San Marino Basketball Federation President Gian Primo Giardi, the hosts won their opener in a hard fought match with Moldova.

San Marino stormed out the gates and took a comfortable 43-28 half-time lead but Moldova would not go away.

They opened the third quarter with a 5-0 run, capped by a free throw of Emil Ostafiiciuc and had clawed their way back into the game by the end of the third quarter when Gleb Beloborodov's jumper made it 50-45.

They put a real scare into the hosts as they tied the game at 53 apiece with 5 minutes to play, but San Marino then found another gear.

They scored six unanswered points and held on for the win behind 25 points of the U16 European Championship Division C All-Tournament Team member Julian Gualtieri.

Moldova wasted 16 points and 7 rebounds of Vladislav Solopa and 13 points and 7 rebounds of Daniel Marcenco.

After day one, FIBA Europe Vice President John Goncalves was full of praise for the organisers.

"I am extremely pleased with every aspect of the organisation of the U16 and U18 events and sincerely hope that the Basketball Federation of San Marino will be able to undertake the organisation of next year's 1st European Championship for Small Countries Men."
