While some players chose to take a rest during the summer and not join up with their national teams, Bosnia & Herzegovina presents one guy that has the exact opposite approach. "I live in the gym" he told EuroBasket2005.com after the last practice before his EuroBasket debut.
At the age of 25, the US born Henry Domercant received a Bosnian passport, and it didn't take long before he joined his adopted national team.
The 193 cm shooting guard, who plies his trade with Turkish powerhouse Efes Pilsen, has already proved in his second season in Europe that he can play at the highest level, and most important be consistent.
His 14.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg and 1.3 apg in the Euroleague were identically matched with 14.0 ppg, 3.9 rpg and 1.4 apg in the Turkish league. For Bosnia & Herzegovina this is certainly good news.
"Joining the national team and skip my summer rest wasn't an issue for me, because I live in the gym and spend a lot of time there. I'm from Chicago, and when I'm home I practice and play everyday".
Domercant spent 4 seasons in Eastern Illinois before crossing the ocean and signing for Turkish side Pinar Karsiyaka. 23.3 ppg and 6.2 rpg convinced the Turkish champion from Istanbul to bet on Domercant and after EuroBasket he will re-join Efes for his second season there.
Adjusting to European basketball wasn't easy for Domercant, and he still keeps a place in his heart for the basketball he grew up in: "It's a different game than in the USA. I think I'm starting to adjust, and I like European basketball. They play hard, and I love the atmosphere. The fans really give all they got for the team. The US basketball is more athletic and a little more one-on-one, while in Europe you see players with more fundamentals. My favorite is the NBA game, but I like to play both ways and I try to do it the best I can".
Domercant already knows a few words in Bosnian, but sometimes struggles when national team coach, Mensur Bajramovic, speaks in the native language during practices. Nevertheless Domercant is set to play hard and try to help his team win their first EuroBasket game since 1997.
"I always want to win. In every game I want to give my best. We have a good opportunity here, but we must remember that we play against good teams and players on the other side. We have to concentrate now on the game against Slovenia tonight and then worry about the next games".
