The Netherlands captured their first win in Group D at the U16 European Championship Division B in Bucharest on Saturday with a 48-36 triumph over Austria.

Robert Boezeman finished with 15 points and eight rebounds for the Dutch, who took control from the off and cruised.

They led 17-2 at the end of the first quarter and 31-9 at half-time and were never in danger of losing the initiative.

The Netherlands had lost their first game to Portugal and fell to Switzerland on day two.

Also in Group D, Portugal prevailed 64-54 over Hungary.

Sergio Da Silva had 19 points for the Portuguese, who led 32-21 at half-time, only to end up trailing 43-42 with 1:21 left in the third quarter.

They got their noses back in front and pulled away for victory.

Switzerland were also winners in Group D, beating Norway 55-43.

The Swiss broke open a tight game in the third quarter when they outscored their opponents 20-10.

Switzerland's Luka Mandic finished with a game-high 19 points.

Bulgaria edged the Slovak Republic 68-65 in Group B to improve their record to 1-1.

Denis Petkov poured in 21 points and came up with eight steals for the Bulgarians, including a lay-up with 4:20 remaining that snapped a 60-60 tie and put his team in front to stay.

A three-ball by Slovakia's Jozef Senohradský cut the deficit to 66-65 with eight seconds to go and after two Martin Gorunov free-throws for Bulgaria, he had a chance to send the game to overtime.

But Senohradský was off target with his shot from the arc.

Jakub Meress had 21 points for Slovakia, who fell to 1-2.

In the other Group B game, F.Y.R. of Macedonia saw off a determined Denmark, 61-52.

The Danes only trailed by four points with just over three minutes remaining but couldn't get any closer.

The Finns are now 2-1 after an 81-69 triumph over Belarus in Group A.

Finland gave themselves a perfect launch pad for victory by going on an 11-3 run over the last four minutes of the first quarter to lead 27-18.

Henri Niemistö scored 23 points for the winners while Roman Rubinshteyn had 18 points in defeat.

Israel point guard Yevgeni Holodov poured in 19 points and grabbed six rebounds in his team's 71-65 Group A triumph over Luxembourg.

Group C saw Luka Zakradze score 20 points for Georgia as they won 59-52 over Estonia.

The Estonians only trailed 46-44 a minute into the last quarter when Zakradze struck with a three-pointer to give Georgia some breathing room and they held on for victory.

Jaagup Russak and Andre Reinart each scored 10 points in defeat.

Montenegro romped to a 93-78 win over neighbours Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Petar Popovic was 13 of 18 from the floor and finished with 35 points for Montenegro.
