Group D: Germany Advance, Miyem Leads France

Germany edged Ukraine 81-79 to progress to the qualifying round at the U20 European Championship for Women.

With 7.7 seconds and Germany leading 80-78, Oksana Kilisova had a chance to tie the game but made just one of two free throws.

Ukraine grabbed the offensive rebound but turned the ball over and Margret Skuballa then put the game beyond Ukraine's reach by making a  free throw at the other end.

Ukraine, who have yet to win, managed to keep the game close despite losing star Arina Lysyuk to fouls in the fourth quarter.

Lysyuk and team-mate Anna Pokoiova each had a game-high 27 points in defeat.

Ukraine led 22-14 going into the second quarter but sparked by Romy Bar and Skuballa, Germany hit back to take a 40-33 half-time advantage.

Germany were unable to pull away but held on for a crucial victory.

Bar had a team-high 24 points while Skuballa added 23.

Ukraine were outrebounded 56 to 44.

France 64, Bulgaria 57

Endene Miyem scored 24 points to lead France.
France claimed top spot in Group D after beating Bulgaria 64-57 in a thrilling game at the U20 European Championship for Women.

Nwal-Endene Miyem had a game-high 24 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for France.

With two minutes remaining, Miyem's five consecutive points gave France a 59-55 lead.

Jaklin Zlatanova made two free throws to cut the deficit to 59-57 but Pauline Jannault's three-ball with 32 seconds remaining proved a hammer blow for the tournament hosts. Jannault made all three of Les Bleues' long-range shots.

France outrebounded Bulgaria 53-38.

It was a fine performance for Bulgaria who put on a brave fight until the end and despite defeat, qualify to the next round as third of group.

Zlatanova led Bulgaria in scoring with 20 points while pulling down nine rebounds.
