Kozachka-ZALK Zaporozhye 61 vs. Gambrinus JME Brno 88

15 December 2004

Gambrinus Brno confirmed their top spot in group A of the FIBA EuroLeague Women beating Kozachka-Zalk 61-88, despite the fact that only nine of their players made the trip to the Ukraine.

Still the starting line-up of Gambrinus includes 3 members of the Czech national team, which won the silver medal at the last European Championship, and two foreigners, American Taj McWilliams and Zuzana Zirkova from the Slovak Republic.

They showed right from the beginning who would control the game, which in fact was already decided after the first quarter. Kozachka-Zalk scored its first point in the game after four minutes, while at the same time the Czechs had already 19. After the end of the first quarter Gambrinus was leading by 20 (5-25).

Kozachka had a good start in the second quarter. Mostly due to the efforts of Olexandra Gorbunova and Oxana Pys’mennyk, they cut the gap to 14. 18-years old Olexandra Gorbunova had 8 points during this quarter (19-13).

After the break, Gorbunova continued with her amazing performance. Her efforts were not enough though to really compete with the strong visiting team. The third quarter ended with a 23–point lead for Brno.

Olexandra Gorbunova led all players with 21 points, while Gambrinus had a much more balanced performance with 5 players in double-digits (Taj McWilliams 18 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists; Ivana Vecerová 15 points, 9 rebounds).
