GROUP BTjasa Gortnar was the key factor that helped Slovenia take control in the second quarter to defeat Belgium 81-76 and secure a berth in the qualifying round of U18 European Championship Women 2010 tournament.
Nika Baric led Slovenia in scoring with 24 points and Gortnar had 22 points and 12 rebounds while Hanne Mestdagh reached double figures for Belgium with 16 and 12 respectively.
Slovenia took off early in the game, but Mestdagh stepped up for Belgium with seven points and four rebounds in the first quarter to help her team take a two points lead after the first ten minutes.
Gortnar converted a penetration into three-point play and led Slovenia in a quick 20-3 run to pull away 38-27 with 2:25 left to play in the first half while Belgium remained cold from the outside with 3 of 17 in three-point shooting.
Slovenia remained hot in the offense and knocked down five triples with an overall 53.8 three-point shooting percentage to built a solid 67-50 lead before the final quarter.
Belgium tried to initiate a late comeback in the fourth quarter with a 16-4 run but it was too little, tol late as the clock ran out in favour of Slovenia.
