Greece Beat Belgium To Stay Perfect

03 September 2008

Greece bounced back from a slow start to use a decisive third-quarter run and beat Belgium 77-66 in a EuroBasket Women qualifier in Liege on Wednesday night.

The visitors found themselves trailing 13-4 less than five minutes into the game but quickly corrected that with an 8-0 run, capped by Evanthia Maltsi's jump-shot that put them ahead.

The game stayed close throughout the second period and Greece led by one, 39-38, at the break.

But they found another gear in the second half, and Nikole Beth Soulis' jump-shot with 2:50 left in the period sparked an 11-0 run that put them in control at 61-48.

An 11-2 run at the start of the final quarter, sparked by Anastasia Kostaki's jump-shot, then put the game out of reach for Belgium.

Soulis led Greece with 18 points and seven rebounds while Maltsi and Styliani Kaltsidou had 16 points each.

Kathy Wambe was one of four Belgians to score in double figures as she poured in 16, Sara Leemans and Laurence Val Malderen added 14 each and Eveline Callens had 10.

The win improves Greece to 3-0 in Group D while Belgium drop to 1-2.
