Imperious Poland Win Third Straight

Poland romped to their third straight victory at the U20 European Championship Division B in Sofia on Saturday.

Taking on F.Y.R. of Macedonia, the Poles cruised to an 83-49 victory.

There were also victories on the third day of the competition for Belgium, hosts Bulgaria, Israel, Croatia, Great Britain, the Czech Republic and Finland.

Poland stamped their authority on the clash with F.Y.R. of Macedonia from the off, scoring 12 of the contest's first 14 points.

Mariusz Niedbalski's team had a 21-4 stranglehold on proceedings by the end of the frame.

After taking a 38-23 lead to the changing rooms, the Poles lowered the boom in the third quarter by outscoring their opponents, 27-14, for a 65-37 advantage.

Tomasz Gielo had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Poland while Gorjan Markovski scored 22 and corralled 11 boards in defeat.

Belgium improved to 2-1 in Group C with a 103-56 victory over Luxembourg.

The Belgians were on top, 43-31, at half-time and then outscored Luxembourg 35-11 in the third quarter to put the result beyond doubt.

In Group A, Israel improved to 1-1 with a 75-39 victory over Austria (also 1-1).

Bar Timor finished with 17 points, five assists and five steals for Israel.

Bulgaria defeated the Slovak Republic, 69-61.

Dimitar Dimitrov had 18 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for the winners, who saw a 12-point lead in the third quarter evaporate to just two at 55-53 with 1:17 to go in the frame.

The Slovakians, who got 11 points and 13 rebounds from Jaroslav Moravek, three times got to with two points in the fourth quarter but Bulgaria scraped a narrow win.

Great Britain continued to set the pace in Group C, winning 71-60 over Denmark.

Devon Van Oostrum had 18 points and Ali Fraser 17 for the Brits against the Danes.

Croatia bounced back from their loss to Britain, winning 79-65 over Portugal.

Henrik Sirko had 17 points for the Croatians and Sergio Santos 14 for Portugal.

In Group D, Martin Kríz had 13 points as the Czech Republic rolled to an 82-51 triumph over Hungary.

The Czechs improved to 2-0 to confirm progress to the next round and Hungary fell to 0-2.

Finland prevailed 90-64 over Switzerland for their first victory.

Markus Molenius poured in 20 points for the Finns.
