Malashenko Leads Ukraine Past Belgium

Olesya Malashenko continued her dominant performance at the Termosteps U16 European Championship Women in collecting 38 points and 23 rebounds in Ukraine's 80-71 victory over Belgium in Group F of the Qualifying Round.

Malashenko remains the leading scorer of the tournament (24.4 points) and moved to second in rebounding (14.6) after collecting her third double-double in five games for Ukraine.

Her team improved to 1-3 in the group but have no chances of making the semi-finals.

Ol'Ha Maznichenko and Anastasiya Bogdanova each added 12 points for Ukraine, who out-rebounded Belgium 50-28 and were able to overcome 31 turnovers.

Noemie Mayombo had 14 points, eight assists and six steals for Belgium, who dropped to 0-4 in Group F. Jana Raman also scored 14 points for the Belgians, who face Russia on Thursday.

The contest was back and forth for most of the first half until the Ukrainians, who play Latvia on Thursday, opened an 11-point lead just before the break. The advantage was up to 18 points but Belgium closed to within seven points on four occasions - the latest on Mayombo's free throws for 78-71 with 46 seconds left.
