| 19.11.2009 Besiktas won a thrilling encounter in the EuroCup Women on Thursday night against Sony Athinaikos in Istanbul.
The hosts were pushed to the limit by the never-say-die Greeks but finally prevailed 80-75 after scoring the game's last five points. Athinaikos trailed 65-57 heading into the last quarter but fought back to tie the contest on three occasions, the last at 75-75 with a minute remaining following a lay-up by Candice Wiggins. Dubravka Dacic made a pair of free-throws with 37 seconds left and Wiggins failed to knot the contest again when she missed a lay-up. Athinaikos fouled Nykesha Sales and the American, a key member of Gambrinus Sika Brno's 2006 EuroLeague Women title-winning side, went to the free-throw line and made the first attempt but missed the second. Athinaikos had a chance to pull level with a three-pointer but Greece national team point guard Dimitra Kalentzou turned the ball over and Shavonte Zellous sealed the victory for the home side with two more free-throws. Sales finished with a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds while USA international Wiggins poured in 16 points for Athinaikos. Besiktas improved to 2-0 in Group F while Athinaikos fell to 1-1. Close games were the order of the night in the EuroCup Women. In Group A, Seat Györ fell at home to USO Mondeville 61-58. Lenae Williams had 18 points for the French outfit. In Portugal, home side Vagos won 72-61 in Group A over Sdent Sierre Basket. The contest was knotted at 61-61 when Mariana Alves hit a three-pointer for Vamos, who went on to score the last 11 points of the game. Another game in Portugal didn't go the same way for the home country as Lithuanian outfit Lemminkainen claimed a 69-67 Group C victory over CAB Madeira. Gran Canaria were pushed to the limit by hosts Dexia W Namur but won the Group B clash, 75-73. Morgan Warburton had 26 points and 11 boards for the Spanish team while Fannie Vandesteene poured in 19 points for Dexia. |
