Beretta Famila won 68-63 on Thursday at Gospic in the opening leg of their EuroCup Women Quarter-Final Clash after a double-double in points and rebounds from Beathny Donaphin.
Donaphin scored 12 and grabbed 11 boards while Raffaella Masciadri and Laura Macchi, two of the Schio team's Italy internationals, had 14 apiece to top their scoring.
Gospic gave themselves a good chance of overturning the five-point deficit in Italy because of their three-point shooting.
The hosts made 11 of 20, far better than their accuracy inside the arc where they made just 10 of 28 (35.7%).
Gospic were in danger of heading to Italy with an even bigger margin of defeat after trailing 50-41 at the end of the third quarter and 53-43 with 8:35 remaining.
But they battled back and cut the deficit to 59-57, only for a Masciadri jump shot to finish off a good offensive spell for Schio and give the Italians a 68-59 lead with just over a minute to go.
Gospic scored the last four points of the contest, however.
Mirjana Tabak had a game-high 16 points, six assists and four rebounds for Gospic.
The second game will be played in Schio on February 27.
