Tarbes Survive In Home Thriller Against Szeviép

28 October 2009

Tarbes GB narrowly avoided a home defeat in their EuroLeague Women opener against Szeviép of Hungary on Wednesday evening.

The French top flight leaders prevailed 81-80 but only after blowing a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Charde Houston scored to give the home side a 72-58 lead, only for Szeviép to reel off nine consecutive points and trim the deficit to 72-67 with 5:43 remaining.

Tarbes appeared to regain control and opened up a 77-69 advantage with 4:57 to go, but Szeviép came right back.

They hit them with another 9-0 run, capped by two Emöke Füresz free-throws, to lead 78-77 with 2:23 to play.

France center Isabelle Yacoubou-Dehoui earned a trip to the charity stripe and made one of two to pull the home side level and after Füresz missed from behind the arc, Florence Lepron made a lay-up for an 80-78 Tarbes advantage.

Vaida Sipaviciute, who had 22 points and nine rebounds for the visitors, tied the game again with a jump shot just 1:14 from the end.

Neither side scored again until Germany international Anne Breitreiner went to the line with 23 seconds to play and made one of two for the 81-80 final.

The Hungarian team did have the last possession but Füresz lost the ball out of bounds.

Tarbes would have won the game more comfortably if they had been able to shoot free-throws.

They missed 10 of their 20 attempts from the line, though, while Szeviép were 21 of 23 (91.3%).

Both sides shot the ball from long range, especially Tarbes who hit 46.4% (13 of 28).

Pauline Jannault drilled six of eight of her attempts from behind the arc for the winners.

Szeviép finished seven of 18 (38.9%) from three-point distance.
