Janis Timma scored 19 points on Saturday to propel Ventspils to a 6-point win over domestic arch rivals VEF Riga

BK Ventspils inflicted a first loss in the Latvian league this season on rivals VEF Riga on Saturday to continue their great run of form in all competitions.

Janis Timma and Donald Simms scored 19 points apiece to propel the EuroChallenge Group C leaders to a hard-fought 80-74 victory in the capital.

Ventspils improved to 5-1 and are in fourth place in the standings, but with five games in hand over current league leaders LU who hold a 7-4 record.

In the Adriatic League, KRKA also tasted victory over their domestic arch-rivals.

The Novo Mesto side played host to Union Olimpija Ljubljana on Sunday night and prevailed 79-76 over the Turkish Airlines Euroleague outfit.

Domen Lorbek and Edo Muric combined for 40 points to lead the winners while Uros Lucic added 15 and eight rebounds.

KRKA is now fifth in the Adriatic league standings with a 5-5 record.

Szolnoki Olaj, who were also in action at the weekend, are bottom of the table in the same competition.

The Hungarians suffered a 78-82 home defeat to Igokea Aleksandrovac on Saturday despite another excellent showing by Marton Bader who collected a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds

 

VICTORIOUS ROMANIAN QUARTET

All four Romanian teams that participate in the EuroChallenge registered victories in the domestic LNB league over the weekend.

For Gaz Metan Medias and BC Timisoara this was their seventh success and remain at the top of the table, although Medias have played ten games to Timisoara's nine.

Medias, who are leading EuroChallenge Group C with a 3-0 record, made easy work of their Friday trip to the capital with a 106-64 rout of Dinamo Bucharest.

Alexandar Mladenovic led all Medias scorers with 18 points and coach Marcel Tenter gave minutes to all his players, with six of them scoring in double digits.

Timisoara also won easily on the road, 91-66 at BC PH Csikszereda M. Ciuc.

Zlatko Jovanovic had 19 points and Ivan Jelenic added 18 for the winners in their Saturday LNB encounter.

Later the same night CSU Ploiesti imitated the league leaders with an 83-71 success at CSU Atlassib Sibiu, behind two inspired individual performances.

Catalin Burlacu made eight of his 14 shots from the floor, including three from behind the arc, to collect a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds.

Virgil Stanescu was not far behind, contributing 22 points and nine boards.

On Sunday, BCMU Pitesti swept aside Timba Timisoara, 84-55, with power forward Marcel Jones scoring 25 points on 67 percent shooting

 

FREE-SCORING OLDENBURG IMPRESS

EWE Baskets Oldenburg followed up their impressive 31-point victory over K├Ârmend last Wednesday with an even more dominating performance on Saturday.

Oldenburg routed Phoenix Hagen 113-62 at home and climbed to fourth place in the BEKO Bundesliga standings.

Konrad Wysocki led all scorers with 23 points in a game where ten Oldenburg players wrote their name on the score-sheet.

On Sunday, Telekom Baskets Bonn erased a 10-point deficit at LTi GIESSEN 46ers in the third quarter only to run out of options on the offensive end in the fourth.

Bonn lost 88-79, their second consecutive defeat in the BBL, and are now in tenth place with four wins in nine games.

Chris Ensminger had 19 points for Bonn in a losing effor

 

NANCY TAKE EUROCHALLENGE DERBY

In a clash between EuroChallenge sides in the French Pro A on Saturday, Nancy came from behind to defeat visiting JDA Dijon 78-74.

Shawn King was immense for the hosts, registering an efficiency rating of 34.

The 30-year-old center collected a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds.

David Melody had 21 points for Dijon in a losing effort.

BCM Gravelines Dunkerque and Paris Levallois bounced back from last weekend's defeats and are now among the four teams tied in second place on the table.

Antoine Diot cut loose to post 33 points in French domestic action over the weekend

Antoine Diot erupted for 33 points and Sean May grabbed 11 rebounds as the Parisians prevailed 89-72 over Strasbourg on Friday.

On Saturday, BCM won 75-58 away to Orleans behind an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double from Ludovic Vaty. Dwight Buycks led all scorers with 23 points

 

BELGIAN CUP QUARTER-FINALS

Okapi Aalstar have gained a considerable advantage in their Belgian Cup quarter-final tie after beating CUVA Houthalen on the road, 100-83, in the first leg.

The second leg is on Friday in Aalst.

Belfius Mons-Hainaut meanwhile slumped to a 94-90 defeat in the first game of their tie with Gembo Borgerhout.

Mons will have the chance to overcome the deficit in the second leg at home on Saturday.
