Taylor Turns On Style As Fener Stay Perfect

15 December 2010

MKB Euroleasing Sopron threw a fright into Fenerbahce on Wednesday night but the Turkish giants overcame the absence of Diana Taurasi to win for the eighth consecutive game in the EuroLeague Women.

Trailing 42-32 in the final minute of the first half, Fenerbahce rode the hot hand of Penny Taylor and a strong performance from Nevriye Yilmaz to win the Group B battle, 92-81.

Taylor finished with a team-high 37 points, getting 34 of those in the second half, and Yilmaz finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Sopron's Angel McCoughtry carried her team for much of the game and thrilled the home crowd as well with a game-high 39 points.

Defeat has left the Hungarian team with four wins and four defeats and one game clear of Rivas Ecopolis, the team that beat them last week in Spain.

The contest marked a homecoming of sorts for Fenerbahce boss Laszlo Ratgeber, the former coach of Hungary's national team who also held the reins of Sopron's rivals, Pecs.

Taylor, the MVP of the 2006 FIBA World Championship for Women, took over late in the third quarter.

With Sopron leading 61-55, she buried a three-pointer and then made two free-throws after being fouled by McCoughtry.

Taylor followed that with a jump shot for a 62-61 lead.

She wasn't finished.

The Australian sank four more free-throws and then hit another jumper to cap her own 13-0 run and give the visitors a 68-61 lead.

Sopron stayed within striking distance and pulled to within 78-75 on a McCoughtry three in the fourth quarter, only for Taylor to go to the other end and knock down a three for Fener.

The Istanbul club kept their noses in front and recorded an 11-point triumph.
