Close Games On Day One In Bucharest

6. Ivo Garic (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
Ivo Garic had a good overall performance for Bosnia and Herzegovina with 8 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists but had to accept defeat against Estonia

There were some close games on the opening day of the U16 European Championship Division B in Bucharest, no more so than the Bosnia and Herzegovina's Group C clash with Estonia.

The Estonians, who got a team-high 18 points from Jaagup Russak, led by 11 in the fourth quarter but scraped an 83-82 win.

Kristofer Kurvits had 17 points, six rebounds and five assists for Estonia while Faris Smajlovic poured in 20 points for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The other Group C game was also close with Georgia winning against Romania, 55-51.

Luka Zakradze finished with 11 points for the Georgians while Dimitri Bobilev had a team-high nine rebounds to go with his eight points.

Marius Ciotlaus had 16 points and seven rebounds for Romania.

Close games were the order of the day in Group A, too, as Belarus beat Luxembourg, 67-63, and Sweden defeated Finland, 67-57.

Maksim Salash was terrific for Belarus, scoring 20 points, grabbing 17 rebounds and blocking three shots.

Oliver Vujakovic had 19 points for Luxembourg, who led going into the last quarter but were outscored 18-10.

In the Scandinavian battle between the Swedes and Finns, Ludvig Hakanson had 20 points for the winners.

Sweden only led 55-52 at the beginning of the fourth quarter but pulled away for a 10-point triumph.

In Group B, Denmark won 66-61 over Belgium.

The Danes led by as many as 16 in the fourth quarter.

F.Y.R. of Macedonia thrashed the Slovak Republic, 84-47.

Kristijan Nikolov had 29 points for the winners, with his teammate Andrej Magdevski scoring 27 and corralling eight rebounds.

There were three games in Group D and the closest encounter was between Portugal and the Netherlands.

The Portuguese prevailed 48-40 after outscoring the Dutch 20-4 in the third quarter to go on top, 36-29.

Francisco Amiel led the winners with 12 points.

Also in Group D, Switzerland won 72-57 over Austria and Hungary hammered Norway 90-41.

The Swiss raced into a 21-6 lead by the end of the first quarter and stretched that to 41-21 by half-time.

Anthony Polite led the winners with 16 points and 12 boards.

In Hungary's 90-41 victory over Norway, Viktor Zrinyi had 17 points and nine rebounds.
