Douglas Hits For 29 As TEO Hold Off Wisla

17 January 2007

TEO Vilnius held off a spirited Wisla Can-Pack to claim second place in EuroLeague Women Group A.

Katie Douglas was once again outstanding for Vilnius with 29 points for the victors but the game was in doubt until the final seconds.

Jurgita Streimikyte drained two free throws to give TEO a 79-74 lead but then Anna De Forge nailed a three-pointer to keep Wisla in the contest.

In a bid to regain possession, Wisla committed a deliberate foul but Milica Dabovic converted both of her throws from the charity stripe and Dominique Canty's missed attempt from three-point range would have been in vain even if she had scored.

Douglas was perfect inside the arc with eight from eight and added three from five from long distance and four from six from the charity stripe.

Streimikyte added 18 and Sandra Valuzyte 10 points and eight rebounds for the winners.

De Forge impressed in defeat, equalling Douglas with 29 points and also hauling down seven boards.

She was nine from 10 from free throws and four from 10 behind the point while she converted four from eight inside the arc.

Dominique Canty poured in 17 and Anna Wielebnowska 12 and eight rebounds for the losers.

Wisla had trailed 72-59 with just under five minutes to play but then went on an 11-point run to wobble TEO.

Douglas soothed the nerves of her team-mates by scoring her two free throws but still the Poles pressurised.

Canty's jump shot trimmed the TEO lead to 75-74 but the home side could not quite get their noses in front.

We knew it would be very tough game," said TEO coach Algirdas Paulauskas.

"In the first half we played very well but in the second one Wisla started to fight more aggresively and to score more points.Leading by 16 points we were close to losing the victory. I am happy that we won."

Wisla finish with a 5-5 record and join TEO in the next phase.

"We played very bad first half," said Wisla coach Elmedin Omanic.

"In the second half we were much better but we had no luck in the last minute to score deciding points."
