There had been fears that Sanikidze would miss EuroBasket 2015 when he sustained an injury during a Eurocup game against Zenit St. Petersburg in late January. Although an initial prognosis of eight weeks was offered, the 29-year-old underwent surgery in Italy, and his contract with Russian club Unics Kazan was cut short. But following intensive rehabilitation in Belgrade, he was named in Georgia's preliminary squad. Igor Kokoskov will certainly hope to be able to call on Sanikidze, after he made big contributions to Georgia's successful EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualification Round campaign, going for 13 points and 8 rebounds per game. He was similarly effective at EuroBasket 2013, averaging 14.6 points and 7 rebounds in five contests. Having played in the United States, France, Spain, Estonia, Italy and most recently Russia, as well as Georgia's two previous EuroBasket trips, Sanikidze's experience will be vital to his team's chances in Zagreb.
