Every country has its own basketball capital, and in Georgia it is the city of Kutaisi, where up-and-coming guard Otar was born. He moved to the capital city Tbilisi at a later stage, and was coveted by several teams. Yet he surprised everybody by going in another direction, moving to the USA to play high school basketball. He picked up English quickly, had to miss the U18 European Championship with Georgia, but returned to play for his country in the past two years with the U20 team. Earlier this summer he was the top scorer for the U20 Georgian national team and added 2.4 steals-per-game, ranking him second in the entire championship, however, it would not be enough for Georgia to avoid dropping to Division B. Nevertheless, his performance was followed by Coach Kokoskov who made him one of the last players to be included in the 15-strong roster ahead of Slovenia.
