Turkey, Belarus Each Win An U18 Friendly

Turkey and Belarus split a pair of friendlies in Istanbul this week as the teams stepped up preparations for next month's U18 European Championship for Women in Slovakia.

In the opener played at the Pamukspor Facilities in Istanbul on June 4, Belarus led 23-22 at half-time but a 15-4 run in the third quarter propelled the Turks to a 55-45 win.

Among the leading players for Turkey was Gamze Takmaz, who averaged almost 15 points and six rebounds at the U16 European Championship one year ago.

She had 10 points while Harika Eldas, a small forward in last year's U18 squad, poured in eight.

Belarus hit back in the second encounter the following day, romping to a 69-49 triumph after storming out to a 24-15 lead by the end of the opening quarter.

Maryia Filonchyk, one of the leading players on the 2007 U18 team, had 17 points and seven rebounds and fellow forward Veranika Adamik impressed with 14 points, five boards and six steals.

Guard Katsiaryna Kashiei also raised eyebrows for the visitors, scoring eight while dishing out six assists and hauling in four rebounds.

The U18 European Championship for Women will be in Slovakia from July 18-27 and Turkey are in Group B with Lithuania, Italy and Poland.

Belarus are in Group C with Bulgaria, Russia and Spain.
