Szondy Clutch As Hungary Pull Out Belarus Win

Dora Szondy came up big for Hungary in their opening game of the Umcor U18 European Championship Women in Tenerife.

The 173 cm point guard gave Hungary the perfect start to the tournament, leading them to a 45-43 win against Belarus.

In a game where both teams struggle mightily with their shooting (Hungary 28%FG, Belarus 24%), the contest was always going to be decided by one or two single plays, and it was Szondy who made the difference.

The game was a see-saw affair, with both sides commanding leads of up to 9 points. However, the fourth quarter was close througout.

Belarus seemed to have the upper hand when Viktoryia Hasper snagged an offensive rebound and putback to give her team a 39-43 advantage with just over two minutes remaining.

But Hungary replied immediately through Szondy, whose three-pointer cut the lead to just 1, 42-43.

A turnover from Hasper gave Hungary the chance to take the lead and they duly obliged, Orsolya Gadnai nailing two free throws to make the score 44-43.

With 53 seconds to go the advantage was with Belarus, but they failed to capitalise.

A turnover from Aliaksandra Tarasava gave Hungary a chance to increase their lead, but Szondy missed a jump shot. Belarus had another chance to steal the win, but Alena Novikava's lay-up attempt fell short and Szondy grabbed the rebound.

Szondy was fouled immediately by Belarus. She hit her first free throw, missed the second but grabbed the offensive rebound to seal the win.

Szondy finished with a game high 14 points and 5 assists.

Novikava led Belarus with 10.
