Group D: Belarus Through, Turkey Rally

Four players scored in double figures as Belarus advanced to the qualifying round of the U20 European Championship for Women with an 89-63 victory over Romania.

Aliaksandra Mustava scored 20 points, Maryia Papova had 15, Katsiaryna Kashlei added 13 and Veranika Valeuskaya chipped in 11 points as Belarus finished third in Group D play with a 1-2 record.

Romania were paced by 22 points and 10 rebounds from Elisabeth Pavel while Cristina Bigica had 18 points and Gabriela Munteanu added 11 points in the loss. Romania dropped to 0-3 and will take on Sweden, Bulgaria and Germany in the relegation round.

Romania started strong early on and opened a six-point gap, 17-11. Belarus scored the final six points of the period to pull ahead 23-20.

Belarus then used a 10-0 run to open a 44-31 lead which eventually grew to 16 points before a 50-39 cushion at the break.

Romania went on a 7-0 surge in the third quarter and got within six points - 55-49. Belarus again had the answer with an 8-0 run and led 68-51 after three periods.

And Belarus put the game out of reach for good thanks to a 12-0 run late in the fourth quarter.

In the other group game Tugce Canitez scored eight of her 29 points in the final 1:26 including a three-point play with 7.4 seconds to help Turkey beat Lithuania 64-62 and grab first place.

Canitez also grabbed 10 rebounds in the victory, which improved Turkey's record to 3-0 in the tournament. Yasemen Saylar added 13 points, four rebounds and three assists in the win.

Marina Solopova poured in 31 points but turned the ball over with 18 seconds left and Lithuania ahead by one point. Lithuania dropped to 2-1 in the group and finished second despite Giedre Paugaite having 23 rebounds and three blocks while Inesa Visgaudaite collected 11 rebounds and six assists and Egle Siksniute added 12 points.

Turkey led 8-2 early and were ahead 14-8 after one quarter.

Lithuania scored the first nine points of the second quarter and reeled off a 16-2 run to open a 24-16 lead. The gap increased to nine points before the Baltic nation were up 33-25 at the break.

Turkey cut the deficit to three points before Lithuania went on a 10-0 run for a 45-32 advantage.

But the Turks took advantage of Lithuania not being able to put them away, going on a 20-3 surge spanning the final two quarters to open a 52-48 lead.

An inside basket by Canitez knotted the game at 58-58 and then she nailed a three-pointer with 25 seconds left from the left corner to keep the Turks within range, down 62-61.

Solopova turned over the ball and then Canitez hit a tough layup and was fouled with 7.4 seconds remaining and nailed the free throw for a 64-62 lead. And Gintare Mazionyte missed a layup with three seconds left.
