Deadly long-range  shooting  by the Ukraine made life difficult for Spain on Tuesday but defence eventually carried Vincente Rodriguez's team to their fourth successive triumph at the European Championships.

Spain prevailed 76-71, but they had to survive against a three-point onslaught and only took control for good in the third quarter after trailing 38-37 at half-time.

The writing appears to have been on the wall for the Ukraine since opening day when Hungary's Eva Seres buried a three-pointer with time running out to condemn them to a one-point defeat.

Looking to bounce back, they had to face an angry Russia team, the favourites for the title who had been upset in their first game by Slovakia and that ended in another loss.
