France Hold Off Ukraine To Win Again

Diandra Tchatchouang led three players in double figures scoring as France remained undefeated at the U20 European Championship for Women with an 80-66 victory over Ukraine.

Tchatchouang collected 16 points, eight rebounds, two steals and three blocks to help France improve to 3-0 in the qualifying round Group E. Hhadydia Minte added 13 points, nine rebounds and four steals and Medelome Medenou chipped in 12 points for France.

Olesia Malashenko scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Ukraine, who dropped to 0-3 in the group. Olga Maznichenko hit for 13 points and Alina Iagupova chipped in 12 points, nine rebounds, two steals and three blocks.

France jumped ahead early with a 10-0 run and pushed the advantage to 12 points before leading 21-12 after one period.

The cushion was up to 15 points before Ukraine went on an 11-2 run to close within 36-32. But France led 40-32 at the break.

The French increased the margin to 14 points in the third before Ukraine cut it to eight points. Still, France were ahead 60-49 after three periods.

Ukraine fought to stay in the game and trailed by seven points early in the fourth. And it was a nine-point game with five minutes left when France used a 9-2 run to decide the contest.
