Croats, Finns Advance, Hosts Still Perfect

Croatia will go into the Second Round of the U20 European Championship Division B on the back of a comprehensive victory over Denmark on Monday in Sofia.

Niksa Bavcevic's team stamped their authority on the Group C contest in the last 3:24 of the first quarter when they outscored the Danes 7-0 to take a 15-6 lead.

The Croats scored the first three points of the second quarter to go in front, 18-6.

The Croatian defense shut down Denmark for the first six minutes of the second quarter, limiting the Scandinavians to just two points.

They cruised to a decisive victory with Roko Rogic scoring 18 points and Franko Sango 17.

Croatia hit nine of their 19 shots from long range and Denmark struggled, making only two of 20.

Also in Group C, Portugal edged Belarus 64-63 with Rafael Wildner exploding for 25 points.

Belarus, who beat Great Britain on Sunday, had gone into a 63-62 lead just inside the final minute after two free-throws by Vitali Liutych (24pts).

Sergio Santos split a pair of free-throws to tie the game and then Miguel Cardoso made one of two with four seconds left for a one-point lead.

Anton Papruha missed a three-ball at the buzzer for Belarus.

Bulgaria Romp

Hosts Bulgaria (2-1) are headed to the Second Round as the first-place team from Group A after a 75-62 triumph over Austria.

Georgi Boyanov poured in 19 points for Bulgaria and Dimitar Dimitrov had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Filip Krämer led the Austrians (1-2) with 13 points, 10 boards, two blocks and three steals.

Israel stormed into the next phase of the competition with a 79-60 victory over the Slovak Republic.

Ben Altit's 18 points and seven rebounds paced the Israelis.

Poles Pour It On

In Group B, Poland cruised to a 119-64 victory over Luxembourg.

Mateusz Ponitka had a game-high 26 points for the Poles, while teammate Michal Michalak finished with 23 points and nine rebounds.

The Netherlands won for the second time in Group B, beating F.Y.R. of Macedonia, 61-56.

Point guard Kasper Averink led a spirited Dutch attack with 18 points.

Poland and Belgium are the two sides advancing to the next stage in the group.

Finland Through Despite Defeat

Hungary won their do-or-die battle against Finland, 85-70 but it was not enough as the Northern Europeans qualified as second behind Czech Republic from Group D on better goal average.

In a battle of 1-2 sides Máté Mészáros scoring 14 points and grabbing seven rebounds.

Finland had a great start, opening up a 20-14 lead by the end of the first quarter but the Hungarians battled back and went to the changing rooms in front, 38-34.

The Finns knotted the game at 40-40 early in the second half but Hungary soon after pulled away.

On top 42-41, Hungary's Balazs Kerpel-Fronius drilled a three-pointer and László Polyák followed with a driving lay-up.

That sparked an 11-2 run that put Hungary in front to stay.

In the other game of the Group Czech Republic secured first place by disposing Switzerland 65-58, behind Ondrej Balvin's double-double (17 points, 13 rebounds).

The tournament continues on Wednesday (18th July).
