Czechs, Croats To Contest Final

U20 MEN DIVISION B

The Czech Republic and Croatia will battle for the U20 Division B crown after winning their respective Semi-Finals on Saturday.

The Czechs beat a good Israeli side, 72-61, and hosts Bulgaria fell to Croatia, 85-79.

All four sides had already clinched promotion by reaching the Semi-Finals.

The Czechs were outstanding.

Martin Kríz and Ondrej Balvín poured in 20 points apiece in their victory over Israel.

The Czech Republic trailed 8-2 three minutes into the contest but then found their stride and ended up leading by the conclusion of the first quarter, 15-12, after a three-ball by Kríz.

Israel kept the game close until the fourth quarter, when the Czechs opened up a 14-point lead.

Balvín finished with 16 rebounds and Kríz corralled 15.

Balvín also swatted five shots.

Bulgaria had a dream start and led 24-13 at the end of the first quarter but weren't able to press home the advantage.

Instead, the Croatians reduced the arrears to 45-36 by half-time and then outscored Bulgaria 29-17 in the third quarter.

Bulgaria only faced an 81-79 deficit with 22 seconds remaining.

Croatia then poured in the last four points at the free-throw line.

Pavlin Ivanov finished with 19 points for Bulgaria.

Also on Saturday in Classification Round games, Tomasz Gielo had 17 points as Poland prevailed 83-70 over Finland.

Alex Murphy finished with 30 points in defeat for the Finns.

Great Britain scraped a 101-100 overtime win against Belgium with Ali Fraser dominant for the Brits.

Fraser had 37 points and nine rebounds.

Obasohan Ojomoh hit a driving lay-up with 25 seconds left in regulation, and Louis Sayers missed a potential game-winning three-ball for the Brits at the death.

In the overtime, Belgium went in front by four points but the Brits didn't cave in.

A Sayers' three-pointer put Britain on top, 95-91 with 1:53 remaining.

Khalid Boukichou hit a jumper and then Ojomoh tied it one last time with a lay-up.

Fraser hit two jumpers in a row to put the Brits in front, 99-95 and they held on for victory with Joseph Hart hitting a couple of late free-throws.

Hungary fell 94-86 to Luxembourg with Louis Arendt scoring 18 points for the winners.

Max Schmit also had 15 points and nine assists for Luxembourg, who trailed after three quarters but then outscored Hungary 26-17 over the final 10 minutes.

Máté Mészáros had 27 points and nine rebounds in defeat.

Switzerland won their game against F.Y.R. of Macedonia after a superb display from Evrard Atcho, who had 27 points and 10 rebounds.

The Balkan side led at half-time but surrendered the initiative in the third quarter when the Swiss outscored them 28-17.
