A strong all-round team performance by Italy was enough to earn an opening day 69-57 Group D success against Slovenia at the U18 European Championship Women.

The Italian victory was built mainly on the foundation of a powerful second quarter display, when the Italians put their foot on the gas to assume control.

And, once they got their noses in front, they never looked back.

After a keenly contested opening quarter which they shaded by a solitary point, Italy made a decisive break with a 10-2 run at the start of the second period helped by a couple of quick scores from both Marida Orazzo and Elisa Penna.

Down by 35-25 heading to the locker rooms, Slovenia head coach Saso Rebernik desperately needed a response from his team and they provided it early in the second half.

However, while they briefly made it a one-shot game after scoring eight points without reply, normal service was resumed as Italy belatedly picked up where they had left off before the break.

As anticipated before the tournament, Erica Reggiani was the architect of the Italian win, stepping up in this Championshiop after coming off the bench last summer in Oradea.

She led the way with 15 points for the winning team while the loss was particularly hard to bear for Slovenian centre Eva Lisec, who finished with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds.
