Lithuania sent out a warning to the rest of Europe with an offensive explosion which lifted them past Australia in a friendly in Vilnius on Tuesday.

Already looking formidable in the early stages of their preparations with victories over Italy, Turkey and Sweden in the Bormio Tournament, the Baltic giants turned on the style in the fourth quarter against the Boomers by scoring 41 points en route to a 101-88 victory.

Australia are facing European opposition this summer as they prepare for their Oceania Championship showdown against New Zealand next month.

Crucially for Lithuania, guard Sarunas Jasikevicius and big man Darius Songalia competed and were on the floor in the fourth quarter.

Jasikevicius is one of the team’s top ballhandlers and shooters, while Songalia is a strong performer in the low post at both ends of the floor.

Saulias Strombergas, a member of the Lithuanian side which almost upset the United States at the Olympics but eventually beat Australia in the bronze medal game, led his country with 16 points while another veteran, Ramunas Siskauskas, had 14.

True to their tradition, Lithuania shot the ball well from long range, making 15 of their 32 attempts from behind the three-points line.

Lithuania were encouraged by Jasikevicius and Songalia, who have been given a little more time off this summer following gruelling league campaigns with Barcelona and CSKA Moscow, respectively.

"They did well," Algimantis Pavilonis, the former president of the Lithuanian federation who is the national team officer, told PA International on Wednesday.

"It was visible that there was a lack of communication between them early but at the end things went more smoothly."

Pavilonis added that by the end of the game, the crowd of nearly 4,000 spectators gave Lithuania an emotional charge which contributed to the 41-point outburst.

Lithuania, who face Australia again on Wednesday at the Kaunas Sports Hall, will be taking part in a tournament in Strasbourg this weekend and will face Italy on Friday, Israel on Saturday and hosts France on Sunday.
