Latvia’s amazing tournament has ended with a bronze medal after they beat Lithuania 74-72 in the last second of the most finely balanced game of the tournament.
Lithuania led from the start of the third quarter until just 19 seconds remained in the game before Latvia took a two point lead through Janis Kaufmanis.
Greece emphatically overcame a brave Lithuania team 86-78 in one of the most entertaining games of the tournament so far to take up their place in the final against Serbia.
The Greeks needed a massive performance from star man Konstantinos Koufos to get past the Lithuanians, as he scored nothing less than 37 points while pulling down 20 rebounds and blocking five shots to help his side earn what looked like their toughest win yet.
It’ll be Lithuania and not Spain who head to the semi-finals as they broke Serbia’s unbeaten run tonight with a 75-71 win in front of a shocked Spanish crowd which included all of the Spanish team.
Donatas Motiejunas, who had got involved in a number of altercations with the Spanish players in yesterday’s game, was the man most responsible for his side’s advance at the cost of the hosts as he scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Spain took a massive step towards the semis with a tough 87-82 win over Lithuania Wednesday in Madrid.
It’s the first defeat of the championships for the Lithuanians, and they were determined not to let their record go as the game soon turned into a tense, physical affair which overflowed into some pushing and shoving at times as the pressure on both sides mounted.
