Spain Beat Latvia, Belgium Hold Off Turkey

Spain clinched first place in Group B after celebrating their third consecutive triumph in an 81-62 upset of Latvia.

Latvia trailed 39-35 at half-time and were handed a blow when Spain went on an 18-5 run over the next 10 minutes to cruise to victory.

Patricia Cabrera poured in nine of her game-high 15 points in the third quarter.

IIze Gotfrida led Latvia with 14 points and Sabine Niedola contributed with 12 and 11 rebounds.

The outcome marked Latvia's first defeat of the tournament.

Spain were superior shooting the ball from inside the arc. Carlos Colinas' side finished 24 of 51 (47.1%) while their opponents were 12 of 42 (28.6%).

Later on Saturday, Belgium clinched the third spot in the group with a 68-49 triumph over Turkey.

Both sides lost their opening two games and headed into the contest knowing that only victory would see one of them progress to the Qualifying Round.

"We knew how important this game was and we got off to a good start," said Belgium's Noemie Mayombo, who led her team with 23 points and five assists.

"We played good defense and were smart on offense."

The Belgians appeared to be in command when they opened a 40-16 lead in the third quarter.

Led by Oze Bagas' hot-hand, the Turks cut the deficit 46-35 with three minutes to go in the frame.

Just when the momentum looked to have turned Turkey's way, they shot themselves on the foot.

The Turkish bench was hit with one technical and Aysegul Gunay got slapped with the other.
Turkey were outscored 22-14 the rest of the way.

Yavas led Turkey with 24 points, 10 of which came in the third quarter.

Belgium were 21 of 30 (70%) from the free-throw line while Turkey finished 16 of 38 (42.1%).
Turkey will play in the Classification Round.
