|Sergi Costa and Spain had to dig deep against fighting Latvians who made it a tied game shortly before the end|
Latvia have been unable to produce the result hometown fans were hoping for, agonizingly falling to Spain 65-63 in the opening Group B game at the U16 European Championship Men.
Trailing by as much as 14 points in the opening half, Latvia grew of the fan support in the final stages, coming back to tie the game up with under four minutes to play.
But when David Cima sunk a pair of free-throws to have Latvia trailing by a point with 2.2 seconds remaining, his team was not left with enough time to run one more play.
Fouled on the inbound, Sergi Garcia then hit one-from-two from the charity stripe to complete Spain's Houdini act.
Marc Garcia was the best scorer of the Spaniards with 13 points. Adnan Omeragic and Carlos Martinez scored 12 and 11 respectively.
Rauls Avenitis starred off the bench for Latvia, leading all scoring with 16 points.
Latvia will now be hoping to receive the same support tomorrow when they take on Ukraine, whilst Spain and Russia complete day two action.
